LameXP 3.0 Beta 24

LAME mp3-encoder was designed as an open-source application for many years and now it’s the best mp3-encoder ever!

LAME gives you the best possible quality/compression, provides lots of function and works very fast. The original LAME mp3-encoder is aviable from the official homepage (www.mp3dev.org), but it’s only aviable as a console-application. Such console-applications are very flexible, but most users prefer to work with GUI (graphical user interface) applications.

LameXP is a GUI for the LAME mp3-encoder, that makes it much more comfortable to use LAME. Using LameXP is very easy, because the user-interface has been desingned as simple as possible and it uses the new WindowsXP style.

FastPictureViewer v.1.00 Build 26 (free)

FastPictureViewer is a small and fast application, so simple compared to usual image viewers that it’s purpose might not be immediately apparent. As a minimalist picture viewer, the program is optimized to do just one task: browse entire folders of digital photos as quickly as possible, while allowing for sharpness checks (instant flip to 100% view) and enabling single-click copy of the keepers to a preset folder, along with single-keystroke Adobe XMP and Vista rating/labeling.

Microsoft/Yahoo Deadline Passes With No Deal

Yahoo failed to agree to an acquisition deal with Microsoft by Saturday, the deadline Microsoft had set for wrapping up negotiations.
Now Microsoft must decide whether to pursue a hostile takeover via a proxy fight or to drop the bid and seek other acquisition alternatives.
All along, Microsoft’s management had indicated strongly that they would pursue Yahoo via all available options, including the hostile route of ousting the current board by proposing its own slate of director candidates at the next Yahoo shareholders’ meeting.
But Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and CFO Chris Liddell softened that stance in public comments last week, saying that giving up on the acquisition would also be an option.

Ballmer hints that Microsoft could keep selling Windows XP

On Thursday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer conceded that Microsoft could continue selling its Windows XP operating system past the current end-of-life date — June 30 — if there was sufficient market demand for it.

“XP will hit an end-of-life. We have announced one. If customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter, but right now we have a plan for end-of-life for new XP shipments,” said Ballmer, who was speaking at a press conference to announce a new “innovation centre” in the city of Mons in Belgium.

Will SQL Server 2008 Slip Again?

With Microsoft’s announcement late last week that it will release SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (SP3) this summer, it begs the question: What’s the status of SQL Server 2008?

Officially, it’s still on track to be released to manufacturing in the third quarter and Microsoft officials say nothing has changed on that front. But some say they won’t be surprised if the RTM actually slips again into the fourth quarter.

Yoko Ono sues in NY over song in movie challenging evolution

Yoko Ono is suing the producers of a movie that challenges the concept of Darwinian evolution, saying they used the song “Imagine” without her permission and led the blogosphere to accuse her of “selling out.”
In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan, Ono accuses the producers of “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” of suggesting to viewers that those who guard John Lennon’s legacy somehow authorized or sponsored the film.
The producers of the film, which features Ben Stein challenging Darwinian theories that prevail in academic circles and suggesting that life could have emerged through intelligent design, said they used only “a very small portion of the song.”
“Based on the fair use doctrine, news commentators and film documentarians regularly use material in the same way we do,” Premise Media said in a statement. “Unbiased viewers of the film will see that the ‘Imagine’ clip was used as part of a social commentary in the exercise of free speech and freedom of inquiry.”
